Free things to do in Charleston S.C.

Free things to do in Charleston South Carolina

1 )Take a walk along the Battery.  It is the peninsula that meets the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. It is the southernmost tip of Charleston. You can see antebellum homes and Fort Sumter, where the first shots were fired that started the Civil War. Sometimes, if the temperature is just right, you can see some dolphins swimming nearby. Across the street you can see historical monuments such as cannons from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, historical figure statues and lovely trees to shade yourself from the sun.

2) The Marketplace is a place to shop for handmade items and contemporary items. You can see how the sweetgrass baskets are made. You can find some items you cannot find anywhere else. The Marketplace is between Meeting Street and East Bay Street and is open during the week and one weekends.

3) The Pineapple Fountain in Waterfront Park. It is a historical landmark fountain in the shape of a pineapple! There are many trees, greenery and benches to relax on, There is the fishing pier off the park. On Saturdays, you can see the cruise ships leave Charleston to their destinations.

4) Window shop on King Street. King Street is full of stores for the fashion district. Lovely clothes for everyone in the family. The restaurants on King Street will send aromas that will make your senses go crazy.

5) Visit historic Rainbow Road. This is the longest set of colorful Georgian houses in the country! The houses were painted pastel colors when the homes were renovated in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Most of the houses were for businesses on the bottom of the house and living quarters above that.

My family and I love Charleston. The historical sites, the beauty and stores make Charleston a great weekend getaway or great day trip.
